Our Work
The Global Policy Institute
- produces innovative policy-focused research on critical challenges facing the world over the next quarter century;
- directly supports policymaking on key issues facing the international community, including great power politics, nuclear non-proliferation, governance of new technologies and institutional reform;
- educates future generations by engaging students in every dimension of our work, including study, research and work experience in the US national capital region and around the world; and
- convenes global practitioners and thinkers with multiple perspectives to generate fresh insights on pressing and emerging global issues.
Our Approach
GPI takes a global approach to policy and policymaking. As the post-WWII order erodes, we help define the contours of new global systems. We consider the bilateral and multilateral interaction of nation states, as well as the foreign policymaking of key countries in the international system. We analyze and engage multi-stakeholder ecosystems of global policymaking, including subnational governments, the private sector, civil society and social movements, finance, media and thought leaders. All our programs incorporate perspectives from around the world.
Our Community
The Institute brings together a distinctive community of scholars, students, practitioners and scholar-practitioners within the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland—a preeminent public research institution in the U.S. national capital region. This interdisciplinary environment enables us to collaborate with world-class experts across science, engineering, social sciences and the humanities to address complex global challenges. Through research, education and engagement, we play a central role in advancing policy solutions, developing future leaders and fostering informed decisionmaking on the critical issues shaping our world.
